CARE OF YOUR LONG DANCE DRUM
by Linda White
Did you make your own drum? Did someone gift it to you? Was it just exactly what you needed at the time you needed it? However your precious instrument came to be with you, you inevitably love it dearly. And, as with all those we love, we want to make sure it is well taken care of and safe. Those of us who have been honored to work with drums for any length of time tend to think of them almost as beloved children!
Just as you will be preparing yourself for the Long Dance by spending some time thinking about, feeling, and setting your intention for what you’d like to manifest during the weekend, perhaps you might take some time during the day on Friday and Saturday to do the same thing with your drum. It is, after all, a powerful animal spirit that comes alive when you begin to include it in Ceremony, creating a loving vibration that reaches out so profoundly into the Universe. With the love you have in your hearts and hands, spend some time with your drum(s) helping to impart an intention of staying strong and vibrant, of taking part in this beautiful, healing Ceremony with a clear voice. Some of that time can be spent sitting together in the energy of Father Sun, soaking up warmth and fire spirit. Be sure to stay with your drum if you sit it in the Sun, always checking to make sure it’s not getting too hot! The same is of course true when using the actual fire to keep it dry.
Taking some of these simple, caring actions could go a long way to help our drum “children” stay as healthy as possible as they join us in song, prayer, and celebration!
